A woman in Budi County, Eastern Equatoria State succumbed to gunshot wound while being taken to the hospital for treatment on Wednesday.

According to the local authority, the woman was shot on her way home from gold mining in Chukudum alongside fellow women.

The attackers opened fire at them in a village called Monita, injuring one woman who later passed on.

In an interview with The City Review on Thursday, the Budi County Executive Director, Odong Alfred, said the incident happened on Wednesday but did not disclose the details of the deceased.

“Upto now did not establish but we have sent some police to go to the site to investigate,” he said.

He expressed dismay over the incident and said it was unlawful for the unknown assailants to always target the women.

“Normally in our situation in Didinga tribe or other African communities women are not subjected to death by being killed in our tradition you cannot kill a woman anyhow unless it’s an enemy who is a threat but this is very unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, Charles Longoli, a Member of Parliament representing Budi County in the Eastern Equatoria State assembly condemned the incident and blamed the lack of law enforcement in the community.

“This problem mostly, it’s about the law, you know, the law is the paramount. If we are operating without the law anybody can do anything without any charges the law is what can apprehend anybody because nobody is above the law.”
