The European Union (EU) has announced Monday that it will supply Ukraine with weapons to fight the Russian government.

This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin placed his nuclear forces on alert Sunday despite looming negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the border of the two countries.

“We are strengthening our response to hold Russia and Belarus to account for their attack on Ukraine,” the EU said in a statement.

“Our new sanctions will harm their war and propaganda machine and have an eroding impact on their economies. We will also finance the purchase and delivery of weapons to Ukraine,” it continues.

Russian state-affiliated media Russia Today (RT) reported Monday that Greece sent C-130 and defensive equipment to Ukraine.

The development also follows the shutdown of EU airspace to Russian-aligned aircraft.

“As of 28 February, landing, takeoff, and overfly of EU airspace are prohibited for all Russian-owned, registered, or controlled aircraft, including private jets of oligarchs,” the EU said in a separate statement.

Moscow says it is working to bring back Russian nationals that are stuck in Europe due to flight restrictions.
