JUBA – The Catholic Archdiocese of Juba has ceased all activities for the next five days to mourn two nuns who were killed in an armed road ambush along Juba – Nimule Highway on Monday.

All the Catholic primary and secondary schools, Universities, and Colleges within the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba jurisdiction and Juba Catholic Secretariat will cease operations effective Tuesday, August 17, 2021.

“On behalf of the administration of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, I would like to inform the public that all the Catholic Church institutions – in the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba will close down for four days to mourn the late Sr, Mary and Sr. Regina starting from today Tuesday 17 to Friday 20, 2021 and work resumes on Monday 23 August 2021,” the statement partly read.

On Monday, four people were killed when a passengers’ vehicle on its way from Loa to Juba fell into an ambush between Juba and Nimule, South Sudan’s major outlet to other East African countries.

Two nuns, St. Mary Daniel Abut and St. Regina Roba were among the four confirmed dead, but no arrest has been made as usual.

The Monday morning’s incident was the latest in a series of armed ambushes along the Juba-Nimule Highway this year by suspected men in uniforms.

On August 12, another passengers’ vehicle fell in an armed ambush leaving two dead and three people critically injured.

In April, an attack on five vehicles on the same road left two people dead and five others wounded with a driver and vehicles torched beyond recognition.

Last month, the East African business community in South Sudan demonstrated, demanding that the government provides security escort for travelers and commercial goods, a call the police heeded to.

However, many vehicles have been moving and continue to move without police consent, according to Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin Buolo, the Spokesman of the South Sudan National Police Service.

“There is an escort but these people like moving very early and they avoid the escort. They are just in a hurry and they don’t tell us that they are leaving, otherwise, we could give them a special escort,” Mr. Justin told the media last week.

He added that “We would tell our forces to take care and that there is a vehicle going so that they can be on alert, but all this is not happening. There is an escort and forces are all over the road but these drivers are not following this.”
