The Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio was thrown into mourning after the father of Fr. Elia Kanido, Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in Tiindoko passed away.
Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro of the Catholic Diocese of Yambio, accompanied by senior clergy, joined family and friends in paying their last respects to the late Alfredo Kanido.
Alfredo Kanido passed away on Wednesday evening in Nzara County at the age of 65, after a long illness.
He was a devouted member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a respected figure in the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio.
Leading the requiem gathering, Bishop Hiiboro described the deceased as “a true servant of God who gave his entire life to God and even managed to produce a priest who is currently serving God’s people.”
He encouraged the community of Nzara to value the children God has given them and reflect deeply on their lives, especially in moments of mourning.
Also present were the Vicar General, Fr. Thomas Bagbiowia; the Diocesan Chancellor, Dominic Sasa; and several priests, including Fr. Alfred Basana of St. Mary Mother of God Parish and Fr. Natale Vairi, Director of the St. John Paul II Institute for Philosophy.
Prominent political figures joined the faithful in offering condolences. They included former Western Equatoria State Deputy Governor Elia Richard Box and Moses Kpoti, former Nzara County Commissioner and current SPLM Chairperson in Nzara.
The funeral not only marked the passing of a devoted Christian, but also reminded the community of the spiritual legacy Alfredo Kanido leaves behind through his son, now a priest serving God’s people.
