The Executive Director of Intrepid South Sudan (ISS), Bol Deng Bol, has called on the governments of Jonglei State and Greater Pibor Administrative Area to establish a joint security force and a buffer zone to thwart continued attacks.

“I kneel before you today to humbly appeal to the government of Jonglei State to reach out to their counterparts in GPAA to, as a matter of urgency, form a Joint Security Force and establish a Buffer Zone between JS and GPAA,” Deng said.

He was speaking during the 73rd commemoration of the International Day of Human Rights in Bor Town. The day was marked by the global theme of reducing inequalities and advancing human rights and the national theme of respecting and promoting equal rights of all in South Sudan.

Deng said that if such a decision is made, it would help in mitigating violence in the state and GPAA, calling on authorities to stop civilians from carrying out further attacks.

“GPAA elements are about to do more horrible things to the people of Jonglei State, and elements within Jonglei State most likely plan to do the same to the people of GPAA.” “The government should not just sit with folded arms and wait to condemn after an infliction,” Deng stressed.

He said GPAA was carved out of Jonglei State and it is part and parcel of the ‘Greater Jonglei State. He urged both governments to intervene and stop civilians from finishing themselves.”

“On behalf of civil society organizations in Jonglei State, I want to take this opportunity to call upon Chief Justice Reech Chan to equally open a GBV and Juvenile Court in Bor, Jonglei State to aid in combating this vice.”

“Human Rights are no longer foreign to the country since it became a member of the United Nations following its independence in 2011.”However, violations and abuses of human rights have unfortunately largely remained unabated with alarming impunity,” Bol stressed.
