Abyei residents stage demo over delayed referendum

The residents of Abyei Special Administrative Area on Monday, May 23, staged a peaceful demonstration over increased insecurity in the area.

The demonstrators further called on the governments of both Sudan and South Sudan to expedite the referendum process of determining the final status of Abyei.

Citizens also took to social media to call for the intervention of the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the African Union (AU) to ensure the people of Abyei are protected.

“The citizens of Abyei Administrative Area this morning took it to the streets to demonstrate over the continuous killing of its people, looting of property and burning down of its villages,” he said.

“They are appealing to the UN Security Council and AU Peace and Security Council to intervene and rescue its people from the continuous attacks.”
