The Vice President for the Service Delivery Cluster Hussein Abdelbagi has directed the youth in Warrap State to embrace peace.

He further directed them to rally behind their governor Aleu Ayieny Aleu to ensure that the rule of law is realised in the state.

“Young people, and the entire community of Gogrial, I am encouraging you to promote peace and Unity in this place. I am here to call upon you to support your governor to restore law and order in Warrap State,” VP Akol said.

The vice president was speaking over the weekend during the inauguration of the Aguok Kuei Olympic Games geared towards the promotion of peace in the state.

Akol further called for the inclusion of women in sporting activities while initiating programs to promote talents among the youth.

“Youth must be reminded of their realistic potentialities in many ways possible.

Nevertheless, for a dynamic society, girls’ participation in sports activities remains crucial.

The new year 2022 should be a year of coming together towards achieving desired goals,” he added.

The post on his Facebook page yesterday confirmed that he was on a peace mission to support disarmament and to inaugurate Twic and Agwok Kuei Olympic Games for peace.

“I have finally arrived in Kuajok the capital of Warrap state ahead of Twic and Aguok Olympic Games as well as in support of the peaceful disarmament declared by the Governor…Aleu Ayieny Aleu as a way of addressing violence and crimes to pave way for sustainable development in the state,” he said in his Facebook post.

“Shortly, I shall be briefed on potential sources of intercommunal violence in Warrap state, especially the three counties of Tonj.”

Long-term solution

In November, the government of Warrap State dispatched a committee to Tonj East County to probe intercommunal clashes that cost lives of 23 people and left 37 others sustaining injuries as the primary solution, leaving disarmament as a long-term solution.

In an interview with the City Review, the state Minister for Information Ring Deng Ading said that the committee was tasked with an investigation to establish the truth and devise ways of ending the conflict between communities.

“They will be there for two weeks and the state government delegation under the governor will go after this committee brings back the findings over the recent fighting that erupted last week,” Deng told The City Review in a telephone.

“They are going to meet the communities and try to bring them together before the governor goes to meet them. The situation is calm since last week. There has not been an act of revenge and or attack because we have [managed] to persuade them to avoid the revenge,” he added.

In August 2021, clashes at Romathieng between communities of Tonj East and Tonj North counties and those of a section of Thiik community were reported, leaving 31 people dead and 29 others wounded.

The government then initiated disarmament as a long-term plan and took action with the primary solution, which was dialogue. It was not long after which a similar fighting erupted, leaving 35 people dead and 80 others wounded.
