Palm Sunday: Bishop Hiiboro calls for humility, peace
By Emmanuel Mandella
The Christian community in Western Equatoria State has been challenged to choose humility and peace as a practice in their daily actions.
Thousands of Christians flooded the streets of Yambio Town on Sunday to celebrate Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of the Holy Week.
In his homily on Palm Sunday, Bishop Edward Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio called on citizens to embrace humility and peace as demonstrated by Jesus while entering Jerusalem.
“Jesus entered Jerusalem not with force or pride, but on a humble donkey. This is our reminder that true leadership, true love, begins with humility,” Hiiboro said.
“Let us walk together, not only in prayer but in justice, kindness, and peace,” Bishop Hiiboro told the crowd.
The bishop’s emphasis on unity comes at a time when the country continues to face political turmoil that is threatening the unity of the country.
The clergy urged those subscribed to the Catholic doctrine to ensure that Palm Sunday, not merely a celebration, but a commitment to change.
“Let Palm Sunday be more than a ceremony; let it be a commitment to walk with one another in peace, justice, and love across the State and Nationwide,” Bishop Hiiboro added.
However, Palm Sunday, which is being observed globally by faithful Christians, recalls the day Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem with palm branches and cries of “Hosanna,” a call for salvation that still rings true today for many in South Sudan.
For the people of Yambio, the celebration was not only a spiritual tradition but a moment of national reflection and communal hope.
Among the worshippers were the Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State, Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa, the State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, James Severino Morris, and the State Minister of Roads and Bridges, Ann Tuna Richard.
