Violence places thousands in humanitarian catastrophe

by Kitab Unango
The humanitarian situation has continued to worsen owing to protracted armed and inter-communal violence engulfing parts of South Sudan, especially in Central Equatoria and greater Jonglei,
The Bishop of Internal Province of Central Equatoria State and the Interim Chairperson of Revitalized Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RMEC) have lamented saying thousands already displaced were facing worse humanitarian assistance.
Dr. Pitia Yugusuk, Bishop of Internal Province of Central Equatoria State, deeply concerned about the plight of the displaced, appealed for humanitarian assistance and immediate cessation of hostilities in Equatoria and other parts of the country to allow people return homes to rebuild their livelihoods.
“The entire Central Equatoria is displaced and the humanitarian situation is bad especially people of Lobonok, Pageriand and surrounding areas are all sent to displacement. They are there without food, water and shelter. No support that has been given to them and the situation is really very bad,” said Yugusuk.
He made the remarks during meeting with Governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil following recent visit to displaced camps in Central Equatoria State.
Yugusuk added, “We are here to appeal for humanitarian support but more importantly is the security because the root course of the displacement is security. So security must be looked into. We want to see that issue of armed conflict are addressed to allow people return home and have space to enjoy the peace dividend,”
According to Bishop Yugusuk, the hard hit areas included Morobo and Juba counties in Central Equatoria States and virtually parts of greater Jonglei State.
However, Augustino Njoroge said the continuous violence was a great concern, calling on the state governors to ensure the issues are addressed to end suffering of civil population in the country.
“The inter-communal violence in virtuoso parts of the country over the past few months continuous to be of the great concern. I hope that the recent activities on the issue of responsibility sharing at the state level will help to address the power vacuum in which these inter-communal clashes take place,”
