UN pledges revival of Aweil rice scheme

The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, has pledged the United Nations’ support to revive the Aweil rice scheme in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State.

Nyanti led a UN delegation to Aweil for a state field mission to assess and support humanitarian services and development in the area.

She promised to visit all the states to disseminate a peace message to enhance development.

The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Tong Akeen Ngor, lauded the Deputy Special Representative of the -General and donors for their visit to the state.

He appealed to the donors to support the projects initiated by the University of Northern Bahr el Ghazal project.

Tong said the major challenges facing the state were inadequate funding to rehabilitate public schools, health facilities, drainage systems, dykes, vocational centres among others.

“The governor presented other challenges facing the communities in the state, such as lack of water yards, inadequate capacity building for the staff, insufficient communications, inadequate support for youth and women’s empowerment, and a lack of COVID-19 facilities,” the statement from the office of the governor stated.

He requested the UN agencies and other international NGOs to support the government to address some of the challenges facing the people in the state.
