The Government of Jonglei State has officially launched its annual scholarship program in partnership with Debre Tabor University in Ethiopia, a significant educational initiative aimed at empowering the youth and fostering academic excellence.

The program, unveiled by the Scholarship Management Committee, will sponsor 100 students every year across different academic fields for the next five years. This move underscores the State’s dedication to nurturing a skilled, educated, and competent generation to contribute to Jonglei’s development.

The launch event was presided over by the Chairperson of the Scholarship Management Committee, Makwei Achol Thiong, accompanied by Ustaz Puok Tut Rang Jock, Deputy Chairperson, and Duol Kuey Deng, Committee Member. The committee announced that applications are now open and urged eligible students to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

“This scholarship program is a milestone in our efforts to invest in the future of Jonglei’s youth. We urge students to seize this opportunity and pursue their academic dreams,” said Makwei Achol Thiong.

Makwei praised the leadership of the Governor of Jonglei State, for his unwavering support for education. “We express our deep appreciation to His Excellency, the Governor of Jonglei State, for his unwavering commitment to strengthening the education sector. His leadership has been instrumental in making this initiative a reality,” he added.

The committee also recognized the collaborative role of Debre Tabor University, whose partnership was described as a cornerstone of the program’s success. “We extend our gratitude to Debre Tabor University for its strong cooperation and shared vision in supporting the students of Jonglei State,” the Chairperson noted.

According to the Scholarship Management Committee, the program is not only about offering financial aid but also about fostering regional cooperation and contributing to long-term socio-economic development. It aims to produce graduates who will bring back valuable skills and knowledge to help address challenges in various sectors of Jonglei State.

Applications are open to students from all counties of Jonglei State. Interested candidates can apply by visiting the State Ministry of Education & Instruction in Bor or the Jonglei State Coordination Office in Juba, located south of Jebel Market (Suk Jebel).

For students in remote counties, hard copy applications can be submitted through their respective Coordination Offices in Bor to ensure inclusivity.

The Scholarship Management Committee emphasized that transparency and merit will guide the selection process. The initiative, they said, is a “strategic investment in human capital” that will ultimately strengthen the State’s workforce and contribute to national progress.

By prioritizing education, Jonglei State is sending a clear message that its future lies in empowering the next generation. The program, through its structured annual intake and guaranteed support, represents a model of partnership between government and academia that other states could emulate.
